Do people blog? What is blog.

I'm going to make this brief which isn't like me but still going to try. The more small things I do and as my laptop fills up with scans, revised photoshop and video files the harder it seems to update my internet spaces. I promise I will have one golden afternoon where I'll organize everything, finally get an external hard drive, and generally be "on top of it."

But here are some recent things nonetheless.

I had an art opening with a few new pieces at my good friend Brooke's store / art gallery, The Likely General. If you are around Roncesvalles this weekend this is your last chance to check it out! Here are two pieces from the show. More to come soon maybe hopefully.

I am also please to say that I've had two illustrations in two separate publications this month. The first is a recipie book compiled by my friends Tad Michalek, Katie Jensen and Neil Rankin, the hardworking heads of monthly music / art / food series Feast In The East. Artists were asked to make illustrations for recipies created by members of the community who have cooked food or performed at FITE in the past, and the book also includes a double tape compilation of musicians who have been part of Feast in it's many years. It's available for purchase at a bunch of places in Toronto (like The Likely General!) so pick one up, it's very much worth it. Here is my illustration for the cookbook (for a Victoria Cheong recipie no less!)

Secondly, new friend Tallulah Fontaine asked me to contribute an illustration for the third issue of Home Zine, curated by her and illustrator Carla McRae.
I also made a poster for a Wolf Eyes show this past May. Sort of a dream project, like one of those moments where if you told me 8-10 years ago that I would be making a Wolf Eyes poster I would be blown away by my future self. Anyways, this future self made a poster for a pretty cool band and the show shredded my brain and my friends put on the show so what is life huh? Not too shabby sometimes.

Lastly, I did a cover for Broken Pencil's May Issue, featuring a piece by my friend Kristel Jax on Drone Day! Here is the original illustration:

Ok I promised it would be short: that's it!

I'm back. Here I am! I haven't posted on the blog since 2014. That's really embarrassing! It's ok man, I mean, lots of things have happened and the more things stacked up the harder it became to keep track of, document and write about the past year and a bit. Also depression is a real thing, and life's been pretty up and down for the past couple of years.

I spent time with an old friend of mine last night. She has recently been pulled into her own upswing from a very low-feeling summertime. She had a wonderful new coat, new job and exciting things happening in her love life and I remembered that of course things can get better. I don't really have too much else to say about it. It was nice to see her, I'm looking forward to the future, but here is the first step in documenting the past little while of my creative life.

I was commissioned in spring 2014 to make two murals for The Drake Hotel. They took a month to complete. The first is on the north patio of the Drake Cafe, and the second is on the third floor in a strange courtyard that is only visible through guest bedroom windows. So... I guess it you stay at the Drake maybe you will see them? I will likely never see them in person again although who knows! I had to climb on the roof every day in the hot sun and sometimes it was very hard but other times it was really fun. The North Patio mural was a pretty social experience, I would often get visitors, friends who came by specifically to say hi or others who were just passing on the street and didn't know I would be there working. Sometimes my friend Tomas would hang out and bring me a pint. I felt very visible and exposed, but it was nice to get positive feedback and to interact with other people. I felt appreciated.

Working on the roof was a very different experience. I didn't have to deal with the distraction of visitors (sometimes it was difficult to concentrate, talking to people and painting isn't usually an easy thing to do) but it was, in the best and worst ways, lonely and alienating. It was tricky to take a break when I felt frustrated, as I literally had to climb either up or down onto the roof every time I came and went. The weather was another challenge: I am really sensitive to the sun and on a few occasions I became sunsick. Other times it rained and I was hunched over my laptop protecting like a baby. There was no real shelter available in that spot.

Mostly working on art alone feels liberating and enriching in addition to being kind of sad. Spending time with yourself trying to accomplish a creative task is kind of the main essence of being an artist (sorry, that was really corny). We join studios and make collectives and collaborate to alleviate it, but at the end of the day it's just you alone in a studio and you kind of have to like it. Taking pleasure in loneliness, wrapping yourself in its weird drafty blanket. You talk to yourself, chain smoke (if you're me), sometimes cry, accept your failures and celebrate magic moments when things fall into place. The ways that it can feel so easy and natural, and the way that failing can be such a painful struggle.

There were other difficulties: sometimes not liking the thing I had been commissioned to make, even though I designed it. Having to walk past patrons in the Sky Bar who had no idea why I was there. I looked like a dirty, sunburnt maintenance worker, which by no means is a bad thing but let me tell you that I am not immune to dirty looks. People who go to drink or dine at the Drake Hotel are very different from the people who make the work on display in the Drake Hotel. That disconnect, the cultural and economic gap, got to me really badly at least once. I definitely remember crying on my way home that day.

Here is the actual work. The north patio mural was only supposed to last a year, but it's still there. Go look at if if you are walking by sometime.

What's up? Is it spring yet? The willow tree across the way from my studio is finally starting to show some yellow-ish leaves so that's promising. This spring has been swamped with commissions and requests to participate in a whole bunch-o-shows! Splendid.

Lets start this off with posters! I'm designing the poster series for a summer concert series called 'Construction.' Created as the summer alternative to the Long Winter, the title plays on that ol' joke that there are only two seasons in Toronto: winter, and construction. Here are the first two:

Secondly, my friend Ian Cheung at June Records has asked me to make posters for June's special events. Special posters for a special store! Here's two I've completed so far:

Also I made this nice window display for Victoire, a boutique based out of Ottawa that just recently opened up a Toronto Location on Ossington! I'm going to take some better photos soon, but here is the one that Kristina Smiff captured for Victoire's Instagram. I look goofy.

Ok so here is another thing. My friend Halloway Jones has asked me to curate the art for this super cool summertime island jam on June 22nd called 'Unaffiliated.' Isn't that great? Yes it is! Please submit, there's only a few more days until the deadline! I bet you could come up with something kewl ;) To find out more, visit the tumblr here. It will be happening at none other than my favourite place in the whole world, Artscape Gibraltar Point.

I am also on the curatorial board for The Roundtable Residency. Founded by buds Morris Fox and Brandon Dalmer, participating artists will have access to a free studio space for approximately a month, and there will be a weeklong exhibition following the residency, with events (TBA) to coincide with it. Submit, the deadline is May 25th! You can find the facebook event here or visit their website here.

There are more exciting new things afoot but for now that's what I've got to report back! Kazoo Fest was a hoot, I went to New York for a week, got 3 different shows coming up in Ottawa, the XPACE Fundraiser is happening very soon, applying to a bunch o' residencies and oh yeah Papirmass interviewed me because I am their featured artist for the month of May! Read the interview on the website here.
Howdy everyone,

So… it's time to update this guy huh? Lots of stuff been happenin' lately! How nice. My exhibition with Diana Lynn Vandermeulen went amazingly well! Lots of people came to the opening, got tons o' nice feedback, and Sara Diamond even showed up and asked me to talk about the show to her! The big cheese herself. The student gallery was nice enough to get a photographer to take photos of the event which you can view here, and I took some photos of the exhibition sans people. Thanks to all the artists who participated, to Anna May Henry for making her delicious Magic Hour drinks, to Cameron Whitesell (of Teen Tits Wild Wives) for providing us with spacey tunes all night, and to everyone who came out to show us some love!
I took a buttload of photos of the show, too many to put up on the blog. You can see the entire set on flickr here (BTW not into flickr's current layout, sorry about that pals). Below are some shots of the psychedelic forest mural I made.
If you are an OCAD student: submit! I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience putting on a show in that space, and the programming there over the past few years has been really stellar. The final thank you goes to Vanessa and Caroline, our glitter gals in charge without this none of which would be possible.

So, kind of funny to be posting a best of list in March since we've all pretty much forgotten that 2013 even happened. Not me though! The year 2013 royally kicked my butt, emotionally flipped me upside down but also provided me with lots of great opportunities for art making. I got a lot done, and I saw a lot of great things get done. Last year once again showed me that life is short and that I am surrounded my amazing peers, endless opportunity and unending support and love from my friends and family. Here's showing a little love back, things that I loved about a year that, without these things, would have been one of the hardest I've had since I moved here over 5 years ago. So, in no particular order, I give you...

Alexandra Mackenzie is Toronto's darling weirdo and a good friend of mine. Between drawing massive melted mashes of the pure psychedelic sublime, Alex has also been consistently been blowing my mind with her drumming and vocal chops, from 2009-10's gnarly grrrl band Dentata, and being one half of drums-and-vocals two-piece Romo Roto. Current projects involve Pachamama with her partner Brandon Valvida (Not The Wind Not The Flag, Mas Aya) but everyone is mostly freaking out about Alex's solo project, Petra Glynt. I first saw her performing under this moniker at Sarah Friend's "Small Talk Lecture Series" Zine Launch at May Cafe in 2012. Alex just released a video for the monster jam 'Sour Paradise' and here is a great interview with her about her art on Weird Canada.

Alex played a million shows this year, including the Punchclock fundraiser (which was a crazy fun time) and shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. I believe she is working on a full length album and everyone is waiting with baited breath. Give the people what they want (Petra Glynt on wax pls)!

Sometimes it's hard to remember the best art exhibits you saw in a particular year, and I'm almost certain I'm forgetting a lot of them, but Tobias Williams' Yellow Pages Catacombs was a definite standout. Tobias took on the project space at XPACE in August, the same month I had a window installation, and it was really great to be working alongside such a thoughtful and well executed project. His pillar of human skulls made from yellow pages makes a comment on history, obsolescence and decay, executed with precision, attention to detail, and was obviously very labour intensive. Happy to share the space with this great project (really what I want to say is that he stole the show, for sure). Bruised Tongue has existed for the past five years which is almost exactly how long I haven't lived in Ottawa. Run by Craig Proulx and Pierre Richardson, this record label is keeping my hometown weird and current, with releases from Can Con favourites like CROSSS, Holy Cobras, Un Blonde, Cold Warps, Ultrathin and more. They just hosted a 3 day mini festival to celebrate their five year anniversary and I'm bummed I couldn't go. But wait, that's not all! In response to Ottawa losing its weekly cultural newspaper, The Xpress (arguably a loss, but whatever), Pierre has taken on the challenge of running his own monthly risographed event/music/culture zine (somewhat in the style of Toronto's Offerings). It's great! I made a cover for them last month and cool new pal Lesley Marshall reviewed the show I did at OZ Kafe, along with the work of Phil Osborne. Which brings me to my next candidate...
This past summer, when I was planning my project for Ghost Hole, a friend suggested that I check out the work of Phil Osborne, a local Ottawa monster maker. I shoved that recommendation in the back on my slime brain, but totally forgot his name. I was re-initiated to his work when I saw a great little handbill illustrated by Phil for my friend Andy's band CROSSS. Then I noticed that he was planning to attend my art opening in Ottawa, so I asked Lesley about him. She told me Phil often opens up the living room of his centre town apartment on the weekends as a store to sell his prints, t-shirts, monster masks, and other miscellaneous spooky junk. So we went and guys: Phil's work is so good. Handmade animation techniques, monsters masks and seriously creepy drawings, his work is executed with style and skill level only a true nerd could accomplish. So I made Phil my new friend and he's part of this show at Saw Gallery in Ottawa (which, for the uninitiated, is a great artist - run centre) and I really want him to be in the next Ghost Hole. PHIL RULES. Also check out this music video he made for Victoria band Babysitter.
Based on the number of shops that have folded in the past decade (Record Runner, The Record Shoppe, Organised Sound, End Hits, Sounds Unlikely) I think it's safe to say that Ottawa is not a great place to have a record store. Arguably, nowhere is a great place to have a record store. Profit seems to be slim and god dammit who would ever buy something when they could steal it online and there would be literally no immediate (if any) consequence. That's why I feel as though record stores must, like so many of the things we value most, be run on love in order to survive. And there is a lot of love put into Birdman Sound, Ottawa's teeny weeny shop that specializes in garage, psych, proto and post punk, kraut, and some other genres I am less interested in. It's a beautiful store, it's been around since 1991, owner John Westhaver has this great radio show Friday Morning Cartunes which you can listen to on CKCU-FM. I know this doesn't really count as a 'new thing' but I'm happy to give this store a shout out for merely continuing to exist (especially since they very nearly folded in 2011). I will continue to give them my patronage, as often as I can come home for a visit.
Owners Ian Cheung and Dennis Reynolds regularly stock amazing vintage records, reissues and new releases at very reasonable prices. There's a lot of gems to be found in this College Street store, and they are also especially supportive of small local labels. Between that and hosting regular shows and events, June records meets the needs of both my interests: music made within my own community, and adding to my small but growing collection of music from a past I mostly wasn't even alive for. Thanks guys! Also thanks for letting me hang out at your store to bug Katie and Alex for hours on end and not making me leave! Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Truth be told, I hardly made any money that night and the Blog TO reporter thought my prints belonged to Jenn Kitagawa (a flattering mistake, but a mistake nonetheless). I didn't really care in the end because this night was F-U-N fun. A collaborative effort from Go Home Print gals Emma Sharpe and Shanley Maguire, alongside Marishka Anne and Kelsey Stasiak, this ram jammed event brought together the best of Toronto's small press slingers, slanging their goods to a packed and sweaty room. After it was all over everyone got really drunk around a bonfire and made out with somebody the end!

Ok so I've known Rebecca Simonetti for about 4 years now. We were studio mates for a number of months at The White House, where we bonded over art making (duh), dudes from Baltimore we were into at the time, and a love of making weird sounds with our mouths. I remember when she told us that she didn't want us to call her 'Becki' anymore which is totally fine but sometimes I still forget and do it anyways, four years later. Anyways, Fin's art has been getting crazier and crazier (in a good way) as has her music and I think she's got a show coming up at Le Gallery which I'm jazzed for aaaanddd she just dropped this crazy music video for her song Anin, with performances by dance collective Fluct.

Fin's Anin is a perfect summation of her visual art work, and it's been so interesting to watch her aesthetic evolve with such consistency and increasing sophistication over the past four years. Her darkly psychedelic visions of girl culture, mental and physical illness, and internal struggle have come into focus with a specificity and purpose that really just makes me want to work harder on my own practice (which, in many ways I think, is one of the highest compliments of all).
But seriously. Alicia Nauta is going to wallpaper the entire city of Toronto. I still remember the first time I bought a print from Alicia and I could only give her 15 dollars even though it was priced at 20 and I still feel bad about it. One day I'll give you that 5 dollars, Alicia! One day.
"We just wanted a wedding that we could plan in a week" said bride and Papirmass director Kirsten McCrea to me at the reception of her wedding to Paper Pusher's JP King. Great job guys! You pulled off one of the most touching, thoughtful and fun weddings I have ever had the pleasure of attending. DinnerDinner (Nicholas Robins and Adrian DiLena's nomadic dinner party-cum-art project) served up ceviche and tacos, the speeches were heartfelt and hilarious, a full swing band lead the dance party in an unreal loft located at the soon to be torn down building at Adelaide and John. This was not to be outdone by the following nights festivities which involved a huge bonfire on Hanlan's point, illegal fireworks and late night singing on the beach (where I fell asleep and woke up, confused, cold but happy). Way to make me believe in love again.
Ok, so, compilations are admitedly not always my jam, but I'll happily make exceptions for these three excellent ones, direct from Toronto's 'Anomalous Music Scene.' Despite the overlap in content, I would highly recommend listening to / picking up copies of all of these, especially if you want to get better acquainted withToronto's weirdo music community. You can find the Offerings tape at June Records on College Street, and Healing Power's Heart of Toronto and Fruits can be found online (or you can email Healing Power to get a CD if you are into that sort of thang). The Heart of Toronto party they threw in September was the best. One of my top dance nights of the year (even though I lost my phone. I tell people it was stolen but really I probably just dropped it in street like an idiot). Also, that Fruits comp is a fantastic collection of lady tunes from Toronto's most badass lady music makers, if you are into THAT sort of thang (spoiler alert: you should be).
Seripop! What a team! I am really impressed with the way these two (Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau) have managed to maintain their spot as some of my favourite art makers over lo these many years. I still have this Japanther poster they made with Micheal Deforge in 2008 and I still love it. Seripop as illustrators and musicians (Aidswolf) seems to be pretty much dissolved at this point and for a while that really bummed me out but if they keep making these crazy paper installations I don't even care anymore. I had a nice chat with Chloe at the opening about how they made this giant vinyl hand from materials they had lying around their studio and how artists tend to be hoarders and it made me regret throwing out a lot of stuff that maybe I could have used for something someday. Anyways, I hope these guys never stop, I need people to look constantly look up to otherwise I'm just lost.
Ok I'll admit it: I've only been able to make it out to a handful of these events. Whenever I try to explain Doored to friends who don't know anything about it, the words 'weird art comedy showcase' fall out of my mouth and are greeted with polite albeit skeptical looks. Fair enough. Sometimes I wonder if I would find Doored as magical and hilarious if I didn't already know many of the performers and audience members. And yet this event is consistently packed-to-sold out and filled with laughter from start to finish. Art comedy, who knew? The brain baby of Jon McCurly and Amy Lam's Life of A Craphead, this event fuses stand up, performance art, music, theatre and who knows what else into a very hilarious monday night. Hosted at Double Double Land once a month, do yourself a a favour and go (or check out the Doored channel where it is streamed online every time). Guaranteed to make life a little more bearable.

Woah talk about making lemonade from the lemon of a local disaster that was the Calgary flood. The whole trip was an almost-didn't-happen of a good time. Firstly, because I very nearly missed my flight (I got to Pearson Airport late, only to discover my flight had been moved back an hour). Secondly because Sled Island, the amazing music festival I had scored a free pass to, got cancelled due to a flood that submerged a good portion of the city, knocked out the power, closed businesses and completely screwed up the infrastructure. In bad times however, the good times must roll on, and I had the best four days ever in all of your basements, at the (also almost-didn't-happen) Weird Canada Tubby Dog show, at backyard hangouts and traipsing all over the city with Sasha in search of the party, man. Babes galore, hot dogs and cheap beer, new friends and old from across Canada. Highlights included OFF!, taking the coldest shower ever at Nicola's, the best saturday afternoon nap of my life, The Beets playing the sweetest set in someone's backyard, a very hungover breakfast at Phil's, crawling along the floor of a packed basement show so I could plug in the mic amp during Cousins' set, and CROSSS's amazing friday night performance when Andy was backed up against the wall with a microphone in his mouth and Ryan had to stand on top of his amp to get away from the crowd that was literally tearing the ceiling down. THANKS PALGARY.

My friend and roommate Vanessa Rieger has been doing her Nightlife Guard project for, oh, about 2 years now? It's first incarnation was on Toronto Island in the summer of 2012, during the Whippersnapper Gallery's New Traditions Festival. After Doldrums played his psychedelic tiki torch dance set, the party then turned (naturally) into drunken drug-fuelled-beach-rave. The party goers began to climb all over Felix Kalmenson's floating room project in a manner which can only be described as 'out of control', which is when Nightlife Guard had to step in and make sure everyone partied safely. You see, Nightlife Guard isn't simply there to save lives, but facilitate partying (such as pool hopping and beach hangs) in a safe and respectful manner. I still remember standing on the beach in my underwear with Sarah Kirwan, watching Vanessa run out into the water wearing a glow stick baseball cap to save the day and knowing that everything was going to be a - ok.

This summer at Sarah Friend's Small Talk lecture series, Vanessa gave us all a power-point tutorial of the role and importance of the Nightlife Guard, what her responsibilities are, and how to become Nightlife Guards ourselves. Featuring a special performance by my ex-boyfriend Vince Vining as the 'Pool Pig' (the rambunctious bro at the pool that ends up hurting himself and endangering the party), this talk was hilarious and actually very practical. Because let's be honest, we all want to have a good time, but partying comes at a certain risk and any one of us can end up hurting ourselves in the process. Vanessa's anti-killjoy approach to keeping a lookout while facilitating a good time (because an important Nightlife Guard duty is to keep watch for the cops) shows that you can be responsible, aware and still keep fun as priority number one.

Ghost Hole V

I should probably come clean here and say that I missed a lot of Ghost Hole V. I don't really need to elaborate too much, but the lesson I learn time and again is that if you want to party you need to eat something beforehand otherwise you are basically throwing a night down the toilet. That being said... the residency leading up to this year's Ghost Hole was some sorely needed fun escape time: hanging out on the island, having bonfires, watching horror movies, and making slime. Everyone's work looked amazing, I got to make a kewl poster, and it was one more knockout event in a series of yearly spooktacular Ghost Holes. Thanks again Vanessa, for bringing out the ghoul in all of us.

Scrummage Noise Brunch in Detroit

This is such a good idea. Scrummage Fest is a weird little music festival that happens sometimes in Detroit, similar to Wham City's Whartscape in Baltimore (RIP). I only managed to make it to Detroit for Saturday evening / Sunday morning of the fest, but it was well worth the trip if not only for Noise Brunch, Scrummage Fest's Sunday comedown event where for ten dollars you can eat delicious brunch in a giant warehouse (former film studio that was a former rec centre now art space?) while drone-y bands play their drone-y jams. After drinking really cheap mimosas and filling my tummy with breakfast, me and my pals starfished on the hardwood floor and let the noise take us to slumber land. What I am trying to say is that this is the best way ever to enjoy this kind of music: atmospheric sounds that build and grow into psyched out landscapes played to a room full of hungover young people taking a communal nap. It was the most relaxing show I have ever been to. Highlights included Ben Filler's band Unholy Water and old-wierdo Detroit noise band Space Band, who looked and sounded like 100% wizard dreams.

Honorable mentions: Crackgate 2013, That Day I Went to the Pool 3 Times, Everything Weird Canada is doing, the Healing Power Records 'Heart of Toronto' party, sitting next to Fake Injury Party at Canzine, and Kazoo Fest (sorry, you would have made the list if that girl wasn't so mean to Vanessa at the pancake breakfast when she asked about gluten free pancakes)
This show invites viewers to experience the gallery as a portal to an altered psychological state. The works presented oscillate between material reality and dream-like illusion. The holographic and iridescent aesthetic that runs through the show is meant to communicate optimism by transforming the gallery into an ethereal environment. Millions of years of evolution has seen The Julia's deep reservoirs of ink and paint form lines and shapes reminiscent of modern day people, along with words and other nouns. Things are very busy! There's been a lot of projects that have dropped into my lap recently (and a few that I've sought out) and I'm very anxious about everything. One new thing, created solely in the interest of fun, is my new music blog, The Loving Echo. Featuring exclusively female contributors, The Loving Echo is a much needed space for ladies to share mix tapes, pod casts and other miscellaneous music things. Check it out! Follow us! Expect mixes from myself, Melanie Bristow Hill, Katie Lavoie, Jayme Keith, Maryanne Casasanta, Alicia Nauta, Kate McEdwards, Lauren Raham and hopefully more.

That's it that's all! And also here is a link to the PDF of the essay Kirsten McCrea wrote about my piece. Thanks girl! I love it, its pretty much perfect...

Also, here is quick snap of my Gallerywest Window, which will be up for an undetermined amount of time. The gallery is located at 1172 Queen West, squeezed right in the strip between the Drake and Gladstone hotels (also my old neighborhood). Thanks to Brette Gabel and Evan Tyler for inviting me to show my work in such highly visible spot!

This update is long overdue and I have tons of news to share: Ghost Hole coming up on Oct 26th, solo show at OZ Cafe, doing a project for the January edition of Fucked Up's Long Winter concert series (same month as fantastic pal Chris Foster), and co-curating a show at the OCADu Student Gallery with Diana Lynn VanderMuelen. I will be posting information about everything as its coming up, I'm scared and stressed and excited and thrilled. I also need another job, do you have one for me? I'm good at teaching kids and customer service and serving drinks and working reception and booking appointments and blogging and illustration and projecting movies in a small cinema and programming educational workshops and general Gallery busy work and probably some other things HIRE ME.

I have lots of important news to relay and things are getting really exciting but for a second I would like to talk about GHOST HOLE, the Halloween art show my roommate and fantastic super friend Vanessa Rieger curates every year. It is happening again this year at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island, and I am very excited to be a participating artist, doing a two week artist residency for my Ghost Hole project, and be on the committee of organizers for this magical event.

In celebration of the season and also for the sake of making a compilation of spooky jams to listen to during those dark, late nights in the studio, here is my Ghost Hole Mix 'Tape.' A mish mash of stuff from my vinyl and what's leftover on my laptop after the Great Computer Crash of 2010 that I've never fully recovered from, I bring you a small collection of creepy tunes guaranteed to bring out the heebie jeebies. Hey guys and ghouls, you slimers, you ghostly visions of the night, this is your soundtrack for late night walks home, for quiet moments at home working on projects, for long stoned strolls through your local cemetery, your background music for this time when things are becoming darker and stranger, right through to the silent void of winter...

Oh. It seems as though I haven't updated this blog since uhhh April. How embarrassing for me. Well, don't panic guys, I haven't died or given up and moved to a shack in the woods. I'm still here, fumbling my way through life in dusty old Toronto, and man alive do I have some updates.

Lets start with the past!

I participated in this ^ super duper fun even on June first. The Commonwealth is a new collective, started by Marishka Anne, Kelsey Stasiak and my gurlz over at GO HOME Print, Emma Sharpe and Shanley McGuire. Intending to bring together Toronto's small press artists and publishers, they hosted a kind of night market at the Sterling lofts. It was a hot and sweaty affair, ram jammed with vendors and folks who were kind enough to squeeze through the tiny space to purchase and appreciate everyone's prints, zines, publications and what have you. And to everyone's delight there was a SWEET bonfire to get drunk around outside and after people stopped caring about selling and buying things. It was great, lets do it again!

Also I should probably mention that an old drawing of mine was featured in issue 3 of GO HOME Magazine! The third issue looks SO GOOD, features awesome design work by Jenn Kitagawa, an interview with Mac DeMarco by Laura Lynn Petrick and a feature on my pal/ fave barista/ artist Shakeel Rehemtulla. Wowee zowee that's impressive.

Next on the list, I was asked to participate in a really sweet poster show at OZ Cafe in Ottawa as part of the Ottawa Explosion music festival. I got to show some work alongside some of my favourite Ottawa artists and pals and to top it off Vanessa, the lovely curator of the exhibition, not only bought both of my prints framed, but asked me to do a solo show later in the year! I was so flattered, I think I probably blushed and said 'thank you' too many times. The show will be in December, which is great because Christmas means people buy things. Isn't that how that works?

I'm honoured to be asked to do this and to show work at one of my fave spots in my rocking hometown. Whoever said Ottawa is boring doesn't know how to have fun.

Alrighty then, lets move on to the present. I have two kewl window installations going up this week! Isn't that nice for me?

The first will be at Gallerywest, located at 1172 Queen St. West. I've been curated into the east window space by my friend Brette Gabel. Brette is a multidisciplinary artist based out of Toronto but originally hails from Regina. I love Brette because she's funny and smart and kind but also because she was the first artist I befriended when I joined the White House over four years ago during my first year in the city.

I had heard about the White House through multiple channels and my friend Victoria Cowan was a member at the time. She contacted me that May of 2009 (or was it June?) to say that they were looking for new members and did I need studio space. Honestly, at the time, I didn't. I was making small illustrations that I could easily finish in my own tiny apartment. But, I was curious, and desperate to make friends within the artistic community (or at all, because at the time I think I knew all of 5 people in Toronto). So I agreed to go check it out. The old White House was located at College and Landsdowne, tucked away down a long driveway far from the street. It was really messy and I couldn't ever have imagined anyone using that place as a space to live in, but I was enchanted by it's weird crusty vibes, strangely sized rooms and creepy ass basement.

However, I was scared shitless of everyone. When I arrived to see the space, they were having a meeting about an upcoming exhibition at Gallery 1313 and a fundraising yard sale. Sitting through the meeting, I felt invisible and intimidated, and Victoria I think even felt the same way, even though she had been a member for at least a few months. I started to wonder what I was doing there, if I could ever feel accepted in this group of people, why I had the audacity to think I even needed a studio, and really generally just wanting to leave.

But in comes Brette! My friend Brette. I don't even remember what you said to me that day, but I just remember that you were the only person who actually talked to me. You probably have no idea, but you helped me to maybe think that I did belong there, mostly because I don't think you had any reason to doubt that I did.

It's just so funny to remember that day, being so scared of joining a community of people that now are actually all very good friends of mine. Vanessa, Jonny, Xenia, Cameron, Tomas, Alex... I can't even remember who else honestly but I just remember that before I broke the ice with everyone else, you were the first, Brette, and I was really grateful for that. It's incredible how being kind to someone, probably without even knowing how much that person was doubting themselves, can help give them the confidence to take a chance. And joining the White House was one of the best decisions I've ever made, truly.

Anways, go look at her blog! She also has a HAND TATTOO which is pretty bad ass if you ask me.

And, here is an instagram photo of the piece (almost completed) that will be featured in the window. Once it's hung and the vinyl lettering (oooOOoooOO) is up I'll take some proper documentation but just for a tasty...

Next we have the big one: a piece in the Window at Xpace Cultural Centre, my old workplace and one of my favourite artist run galleries in the city. I'll be recreating this piece (but with some new surprises!) that I made for the GO HOME Issue 2 magazine launch.

My artist statement for the piece, entitled 'Don't Go':

Don't Go is part of an ongoing process involving Dickens' attempts to face a specific fear formed from both personal experience and observations of changes within her community due to gentrification. The spaces we consider homes, both physically and emotionally, are constantly subject to upheaval and displacement, often unwanted. In this work, the phrase "Never Leave" becomes a simultaneously affectionate and threatening plea, based in a desperate desire to halt the linear trajectory of time, from which the loss of what we cherish the most will inevitably ensue.

The opening is Friday the 9th and if you are around I'd sure love to see your smiling face! Cheap cheep beers and pals and Amber Landgraff is curating a group exhibition in the main space featuring guess who? No one other than my friend Brette Gabel. She will be showing some of her beautiful illustrative quilts, including one that was shown in that very first White House show I participated in at Gallery 1313 back in July 2009. It's funny how things come full circle, huh?

I should also mention that my good friend Kirsten McCrea, artist and head honcho at Papirmasse, is doing the write up for my piece. We had a lengthy interview to talk about it on Monday and wow is it ever cool to discuss ideas with friends, amirite? All the write ups for the exhibitions at Xpace are catalogued and included in a publication at the end of the year. I can't wait to see what she's written and I'm sure it will be more brilliant than my actual piece ;)

That's all for now! Next update will include documentation and probably I'll make a PDF of the writeup and oh yeah guess what I'M GOING TO LONDON ON SATURDAY. Nana nana boo boo, smell ya LATER Toronto!
It was so great! I wore really crazy shoes and people complimented my work a bunch!

If you are interested in buying the magazine, the poster, or any other little treats from GO HOME please visit their store!

And thanks again to Emma Sharpe, Shanley McGuire and Rhodi Illiadou for making me your cover girl and feature artist of this issue. I had a great time and you ladies have worked so hard.

Stay tuned, I will be uploading images of my work from the launch, and probably some other things as well. I've filling out submissions, reading a bunch and have a few new projects in the works. It's cold today but summer is almost here and wow we deserve it guys.

Also, I've been working at Xpace! Isn't that nice? Yes it is. I mostly just work on their Blog, posting about upcoming events at Xpace but also calls for submissions that are for, or friendly to, emerging and student artists! Check it out from time to time, there are always really amazing opportunities out there: sweet residencies, group shows, grants, galleries opening their doors for emerging curators and projects! Go for it, friends!

So things have been busy. Things to expect in the near future: more zine fairs, more zines, new work, an artist statement, a blog design overhaul, and a website!! OOOOOOOO LALA.

First things first! Exciting news! Since I'm pretty sure most of the people who view this blog are just my friends this is probably old news to you, but just in case you wandered into this nice warm blog here from the freezing cold internet, it delights me to inform you that I will be exhibiting new work this coming Friday! At the GO HOME Magazine Launch!

Not only am I showing new work at the launch party but I have also designed a poster for them, which has been turned into a risograph print by Jesjit at Color Code Printing.

And not only am I showing new work and have designed a poster, but I am also featured in the magazine!

AND not only am I featured in the magazine, but they decided to put Double Self Portrait that I submitted on the gad dam cover.

You ladies sure have treated me somethin special. Thanks to Emma Sharpe, Shanley McGuire and Rhodi Illiadou for all your support, for putting this publication together in the first place, and providing a space for emerging artists to show their work.
Toronto locations include Art Metropole, June Records, One of A Kind and Lebel and Crowe.

I just got back from Expozine this weekend and it was pretty special. The first day I was all like 'no one likes my stuff' and then the second day I was like 'everyone likes my stuff!' So I sold some zines and prints and generally had a nice time.

Zine fairs are simultaneously ego boosting and intimidating. The level of people's work is all over the place. This zine fair I learned that getting a little tipsy helps, standing up is nice and more people will talk to you, I should probably look into getting some sort of stand for my zines and a business card would be a very good idea.

But....

... guess what? I'm in another zine fair this weekend. That's right, you can catch me selling prints and little books at XPACE from 12 to 5 pm. The final event (I think?) at Xpace's Ossington st. location before they haul over to Dundas and Landsdown. Bye bye Ossington, who needs you and your overpriced restaurants.

Come!

So after over a year I finally got a couple of drawings back from my friend Alexandra Mackenzie from when she took my drawings down to Detroit for Myriad Shocks. They are from the two person show I did at the White House Studio Project last summer with my friend Greg Zenha. Annnnd here they are!
Here is the image I got printed at Paper Pusher, pre-riso printing. I'll be selling this and other nice things at CANZINE this upcoming Sunday! (pssst it's also my birthday)

In other news, my friend Felix Kalmenson has been working on a show for XPACE that is opening this coming friday. I thought I would plug this because, hey, he's my friend, but also because it's relevant to my blog post from a couple of weeks ago. Here is his artist statement:

Intersection is a photo and sound based installation that explores
how the condominium boom has produced vast ahistorical
landscapes that have resulted in the increasing privatization of
public life and a construction of new geographies of exclusion.
Furthermore, through the demolition of memory embedded in
historical architectures, these hypermodern spaces have constructed
a space devoid of memory and reference to complex social and
economic geographies, signalling a paradigm shift to neoliberal
notions of publicness and a suburbanization of the city.

Felix is also the person behind the Water Walk Sky Artist Residency. Some of you who attended this summer's New Traditions Festival this summer may remember a certain floating box...

Artists (and friends) Vanessa Rieger, Melissa Fisher, Kaitlin Till-Landry and Faye Mullen had the opportunity to exhibit work and participate in the space before, unfortunately, it had to be removed from the waters around Toronto Island (check out Felix's website and you will find a nice photo of the cube during Faye's residency).

The residents of Toronto Island were not happy about the presence of the cube and Felix was forced to move it out of the waters of Toronto Harbour. It has now found a new home on the property of Don Miller, the man behind the amazing summer artist residency Don Blanche.

Felix is hardworking and brilliant, and I am excited to see his show and all his future projects. Seriously dude, way to go!

Ok yeah that's it bye bye!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1696962174911579685.post-1881425404548120652012-10-05T10:53:00.003-07:002012-10-05T11:01:24.928-07:00Recent Things and Where Will I Live Once Toronto Is a City Full of Glass Towers That Cost A Million DollarsHello there friends, I am here with an update and also a rant,

The Sappyfest Zine fair was pretty fun dudes! I sat across from Chris Foster (this guy is the best guy) and my friend Jesjit (another good guy) who runs Colour Code printing. Everyone was really friendly, I made some nice trades and sold some work and even missed Calvin Johnson because I was having such a great time. Here's me! Vince took this.

Oh yeah and here's another picture he took of me at the OCAD zine fair which I forgot to publish.

Thanks Vince!

My time out east was pretty special. Its a funny thing, I used to travel a lot and it's slowed down since I moved to Toronto (probably because I don't live with my mom in Ottawa anymore). I get a pretty strong urge when I go new places to start thinking about the possibility of living somewhere different. I used to say that I was completely satisfied in Toronto, and though I still think that's true, the city has been going through a lot of changes lately. There's been much talk about how hospitable (read: affordable) this place will continue to be for artists. (And it's standing on thin ice as is)

Lets talk about where I live for a second. Here:

If you are my friend or an artist in Toronto then I'm sure you are more than familiar with the Niagara St studios, aka The Coffin Factory. I'm fortunate enough to be living in a large live-work studio in a very central location (but, as it stands I have to live with four other people to make it affordable, which I'm not complaining about). My building is on the way to being converted into condominiums, they will be building two towers in the back to pay for the renovation of the inside of the building that I currently live in, which is a hundred and twenty year old factory. Here are the offical plans:

During a public meeting about the proposal for redevelopment, my neighbour asked probably the most relevant question (as a tenant) you could possibly ask to Alan, the owner of the property: "Do you think any of us will be able to afford the new units?"

Alan's response was "Well, I don't see why not."

I think that was a pretty honest answer to the question, but it points out a larger problem, which is that the people who are responsible for new residential and commercial studios and artist spaces, have no concept of how little money the average young emerging artist or musician actually makes. Everyone I know is in debt, everyone I know has to work a full time job to be able to afford the standard 600-700 dollars a month rent (that is getting harder and harder to find in this city as it is). Friends and peers of mine who are even more successful have a corresponding deficit (aka the people I know who are recognized the most in the art world have the least money and most debt). I know I am making some generalizations, but you get the picture. The point is, we cannot afford the new units.

David Mirvish and Frank Gehry are in the process of planning 3 supertowers in the west downtown king street area (a ten minute walk from where I live). Over eighty stories high, these towers will comprise of commercial and residential units, including a gallery for Mirvish's personal collection of abstract art, and a new OCAD gallery. The project is ambitious, the buildings are beautiful and almost terrifying to look at (they are going to be SO TALL), and they are probably going to redefine the skyline of Toronto or something like that. Great, new art spaces, great, Gehry is a famous architect and he will pretty up the city with his nice steel towers, but the point is, we cannot afford these new units.
I look out my bedroom window every day and see cranes. If I go for a bike ride east or west of my building I will almost definitely run into not one, but several condos under construction that did not exist a few months ago. MOCCA is getting kicked out out of their queen west location in 2014 for, guess what? Condos, probably for people who want to live in the 'hip, arty neighborhood' of the west end.

I get how gentrification works, guys, but what if we lived in a world where art spaces remained affordable? Oh well, see you in Hamilton in a few years? Just wait 'till they extend the go train line.

I love Toronto, I really do. I have never once regretted my decision to move here, and I become defensive when either people who live here complain about it, or people who don't make fun of it. It's a fucking awesome city full of great music, food, art, and independent business. It's huge and exciting and although sometimes people can be stuck up, you can create whatever world you desire and surround yourself with like minded peers and a supportive community. It's safe and fun and I like it and I always have. But even' I've become skeptical this past summer. When I go on the roof of my building and see the fort of cheaply made glass condo towers I wonder if maybe it's time to jump ship, because I don't know if this city that I love is going to be the same place in the next five years. I'll be travelling a lot more hopefully and scoping out new possibilities. I would love to stay in Toronto, but when I am physically being enclosed every day by this false lifestyle utopia, I feel as though me and all of my friends are literally being squeezed out.

Or maybe I just need to move away from King West?

Ok so whatever speaking of HAMILTON I did an art project there with En Masse in September at the design annex.

Myself and several other artists made these on large, blob-like pieces of primed birch wood.

Also, I did a mural project with them behind El Gordos in Kensington Market. Here's a photo of me and my good pals Alex Mackenzie and Nic Robins.

And, if you are interested, here is an opinion piece/rant about the demise of artist squats in Berlin by my friend and roommate Vanessa Reiger. I understand that this happens in all major cities, especially ones with thriving art communities. I suppose it's almost a backhanded compliment, kind of an 'hey we like what you're doing, lets make some money off it'. Vice did a historical breakdown of Tacheles and it's pretty informative. My neighbour Wilson (who I have yet to meet personally) is taking portraits and profiles of people who live and work in my building too. Change and so-called 'progess' is inevitable, I get it, but at least there are people out there documenting the history of these spaces. After the public meeting I attended, I couldn't help but see myself in ten years, walking down Niagara, looking at my building and remembering what it used to be like (and I haven't even lived there that long). It made me feel pretty bummed, dudes, being in the present and already seeing it as a past that can never be recovered.

Ok that's it! It's my brithday in 3 weeks! Also, what should I be for halloween? Vince suggested this (not idaho).

So it's been a while, but I'm back now to tell you that I'll be selling some zines at the Sappyfest Zine Fair this coming weekend! I'm headed out to New Brunswick with some pals tomorrow, then off to Halifax with Vince, then off to Cape Breton and then Newfoundland! Phew.

Here's a sneak peak at what I'll be selling.

A new zine called 'Don't Be Scared'

A beautiful risograph print made by the awesome JP King at Paper Pusher. He is also going to be selling copies of the print at the upcoming Zine Dream 5, as well as on the Paper Pusher website! This trip unfortunately means I won't be attending this year's Zine Dream, but it looks amazing and everyone else should go.

Other than that, I just finished a 3 month residency on Toronto Island and it was amazing. I'm working on a clay animation film with my friend Sarah D'Angelo (check out her other clay animation projects on her website) and I'm having an amazing summer. I'm kind of tanned which is ok, my hair is really really long, I lost my bank card for probably the hundreth time today. I'm doing thesis next year and I don't really want to, but it's about time to get it over with so here we go. I fell off my bike and I have a bruise on my leg that looks like abstract art.

Love you! See you in a few weeks, Toronto! xoxoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1696962174911579685.post-40730510579204545822012-02-29T18:35:00.004-08:002012-02-29T18:43:28.701-08:00OCAD ZINE FAIRHi guys

Quick update to say that that I'll be manning a table at the OCAD zine fair tomorrow! Happy birthday Laura! You are 24 on the 24th! You are so old.

Ok now on to business. I finally started taking some documentary photos of drawings from the show this summer. Since school began I haven't been doing any of my own work, and it's very depressing. I'm submitting these two drawings to two different publications and XPACE is having a zine fair in December, so those two things have gotten me to start documenting my past work properly and thinking about the next step. Not that I wasn't thinking about the next step, but you know, for real this time.

This blog is a funny thing to re read. My own writing is the worst! Don't you ever feel that way? I'm too self concious about being self concious to take any of this down. My past is nothing to be ashamed of! I'll probably re read this in three months and be like 'oh geez Julia...'

I think it's very important to be sincere and work hard, also not to be afraid of getting older. That's all I have to say. Here some art for you to look at, and I will have more up over the next couple of weeks. I'm not posting any school work because it all sucks.

Ok bye!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1696962174911579685.post-13963553857954063442011-09-24T11:14:00.000-07:002011-09-24T11:41:11.775-07:00SHOWSHi pals!

I'm in a couple of shows this weekend in other cities that I can't go to because of overwhelming school work.

The first is at Greg's loft in Montreal:

POOP MONTREAL PRESENTS:
✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘

✘ - Four bands, four artists, two lofts, and one dog.

Musical Performances by:

KIERAN BLAKE (Montreal)
http://kieranblake.bandcamp.com/

COUSINS (Halifax)
http://www.myspace.com/cousinscousins

LOOM (Toronto)
http://loommusic.ca/

THOMAS (Toronto)
http://www.myspace.com/isthisthomas

✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘
✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘

Art and Photography by:

DIETRICH ROSTECK
http://www.lapetitemortgallery.com/dietrich-rosteck/

GREG ZEHNA

MATT KING

JULIA DICKENS
http://juliadickens.blogspot.com/

✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘FIVE DOLLAR ENTRY FEE✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘✘

Wahhh I can't go. Our friend Ben Filler has been putting this event together with a few other folks and he's been working really hard! Thanks so much Ben, I miss you all the time and I wish so much that I could be there.

Up next: scans of some prints I made last semester, a few new drawings. I've been calming down and speeding up at the same time. I am excited to submit to Ghost Hole, writing an event submission to Xspace, having some really great profs this year, cutting out sugar and alcohol for a bit (possibly the sugar permanently), thinking a lot about quitting smoking after my birthday (which is in one month!). I want to learn to play the drums!

My Aritst Statement:

"My work for 'Cataract' is divided into two separate bodies. The first is a mind-map of process-based text and images, created as a collection of intuitive knowledge and perception. The latter is a series of large drawings that exist as a result of the mind-map, intended to explore the ambiguity and contradictions in specific psychological states, the fractured self.

The work intends to evoke a dream space, as a representation, interpretation, and re-arrangement of memory. When we experience dreams, the narrative is often illogical, absurd, confusing and at times terrifying. The meaning behind that experience, however difficult to define, is usually very clear though, sometimes even more so than in our experiences in waking life.

In those narratives I have recorded what I find to be significant: the split nature of the human condition, the life/death wish, the allure of the void, quiet isolation and deafening confusion, a sense of humour about the senseless, the humility and hope in existance.

The intent is for the viewer to track their own experiences through the work, as I come to terms with my own purpose. I never want to truly be alone, and I never want to die. If you asked me why I chose to make art, my answer would be this:

'Because I am alone, and I am going to die.'"

There you have it. The feedback, as I may have mentioned before, was outstanding. I was kind of blown away, especially considering the day I headed over to the White House to hang it I was having some serious doubts, along the lines of 'who the fuck do you think you are?' and so forth. I felt like I was taking some sort of risk with the text work/mind map because a lot of it is pretty personal. Ultimately the whole body of work is a kind of self portrait, but in what I hoped to be an indirect way. The reason why my pieces worked well alongside Greg's, because that is what he was attempting as well, but in his own specific way. In the aftermath, it seems somewhat surreal, but ultimately I am glad that the post show depression that can sometimes come after months of hard work, a short lived opening night high, having to shelve the work and be faced with the daunting question of 'now what?', has been pretty minimal.

In other news, I would like to maybe point out that I am getting really tired of art snobbery and insecurity. I see it coming from every direction and perspective. Its important to be critical and know what you like but I what I am observing is an attitude that is mostly unhealthy: a self- concious obsession with derivativeness (as in criticizing the works of others for being 'too derivative'), excessive focus on medium over content, and this ridiculous competition over authenticity and newness. 'Well that's been done before' and 'I dunno, I'm kind of over that' HELLO PEOPLE it has all been done before, this is besides the point!

Everyone, just make work that is meaningful, lets please try to stop this insecure bullshit. Its a negative way of thinking that is harmful to yourself, your peers and your community. Not to sound like a self help book, and again this does not mean that I do not support critical thinking, but I feel sometimes that our focus needs to be redirected into the positive aspects of both our community and our individual practices. If art is something that you love, please treat it as such. The world at large constantly denies the function and importance of artistic practice and the last thing that we need is for people within this community doing the same.

Thats it! I hope everyone had a great summer, I know I did. Keep up the good work, I'll try to do the same.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1696962174911579685.post-20948274299058587292011-07-20T09:38:00.000-07:002011-07-20T09:58:39.773-07:00CATARACTSo Greg and I had our opening last friday.

It went really really well and I think we are going to try and do the same show in Montreal, possibly with our friend Dietrich Rostek (link is on my sidebar) although we haven't actually asked him yet.

CATARACT from jeremy shantz on Vimeo.

Here is the full length film that Greg made with Jeremy Shantz, which was premiered at the opening. My roommate Brendan said something about this film which I really liked and that I also think sort of goes along with and compliments Greg's artistic style in general.

He told me that the artist Sophie Calle once said that humour is the hardest thing to put into your work. You run the risk, with humour, of just being a 'funny' artist, in which case of course neither you or anyone else can take you seriously. Its a difficult thing to have a sense of humour while also being sincere about a possibly difficult and serious subject. And Brendan believed that the film managed to do both.

I'm going to have to strongly agree. This film makes me laugh and literally also makes me want to weep. Its about a specific personal experience but somehow I think can manage to hit a nerve in most of us, or at least I hope so. I have been in communication with Greg since he first concieved of the idea for this film until its completion, so maybe my bias is far too strong. I am interested in hearing what other people think, but so far, Brendan's opinion included, is that people were impressed with the technical skill with which the film was executed, but more importantly with its emotional content and impact.

I can't watch it anymore, because I will probably just cry again, but watch it, let me know what you think, if possible.

Dan Epstein took photos of the event, and as soon as I get them from that lovely man, I will post them up here and on facebook for people to see. I am also going to take a short video of the exhibit before I take it down from the White House, so that's another treat to look forward to.

Thanks to everyone who came out, who gave me the best feedback I have ever gotten on my work, ever, who supported both of us, and to the White House as well. You guys are just the fucking best.

I have lots of great plans for projects in the future... after a year of some serious self doubt and questioning, I finally feel like I am on a path, there is a purpose and that I can and will accomplish the things I dream about. Its a pretty amazing feeling, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for reading, xoxo.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1696962174911579685.post-66103201291048081772011-07-03T08:52:00.000-07:002011-07-03T09:40:47.652-07:00OH HIIts been a while, huh?

I've been working on a lot of things, but haven't really felt the urge to post anything in a long time. Sometimes I just like to have the privacy to work things out without having to show anybody except maybe my non internet peers and teachers. Also, the constant struggle of 'why am I doing this with my life' continues as per usual. What else is new?

Maybe its important to question, within reason of course. You have to be able to push your work. I tend to get a little too bogged down in the questions of 'are you really cut out for this?' and 'does anybody actually care?' OH WAIT, I CARE. That is always what is important right?

Anyways, I have some news! I have a show (actually two) coming up in two weeks!

First, lets have a little life update: I lived at the Gibraltor Point Art Centre for a month in June and it was just the loveliest. Beach parties, great people, beautiful studio, so much kale. I'm a little sad to return to the city. BUT GUESS WHAT? I am going to register for next summer so don't worry, I'll be back. I wish I could just live there forever, its really as magical as everyone says it is.

Ok, so I took a little trip to Montreal back in April and that was real nice except for the weather but the best part about the trip was that I got reunited with my friend Greg Zenha. Greg is a photographer and he's a real good one, and we started talking about our ideas and things we were working on and I was all like 'hey! lets do a show together' and he was like 'ok!' and that was pretty much it.

Here's me talking about this show on the island with David Hanes (my studio mate):

The show is called 'CATARACT.' Developed as a means of individually documenting memory and personal experiences, the artists found a common dialogue within their ideas: a sense of frustration but also humour, a break down of significant events, the emotional cataract that follows, and the desire to create meaning of those events in hindsight.

The mirror that Greg and Julia hold up to each other reflects three thresholds. Initiating a conversation between the two artists but also with the viewer. The ambiguity of these three images triggers an emotional memory, ideally exposing the viewer to something within themselves and their own experiences.

Julia Dickens is currently completing a BA in Illustration with minors in Printmaking and Painting & Drawing. She is a former board member at the White House Studio Project, and has shown work in various group shows in Toronto and Ottawa.

Greg Zenha is a graduate of the School of Photographic Arts in Ottawa, specializing in large format film photography. He currently lives and has his studio in Montreal, Canada.
